Blunt Person Bestie: Why Blunt Friends Are a Big Boon in Disguise

A blunt person will tell you straight. What you see is what you get. They get a bad reputation, but surely being honest is a good thing?

Being blunt can be both a blessing and a curse. A blunt person isn’t going to sugar-coat anything, but how does that fly with those around them?

It really depends on whether you appreciate being told the truth very literally or not. You see, if you’re blunt, you’re not bothered about whether or not you hurt someone’s feelings, you’re just focused on being honest. You believe that by being as honest as possible, you’re doing them a favor – even if they don’t see it at the start.

But, is being blunt wrong, or is there some amount of desire to do good underneath it all? [Read: 20 positive personality traits that can change your life forever]

What does it mean to be a blunt person?

A blunt person is someone who says what’s on their mind without considering the fallout of what they say. It can also be described as a straightforward person, essentially someone that says it like it is. They’re going to be honest with you at all times.

If you want the truth and you want to know that the person who’s telling you isn’t going to fob you off, go and see a blunt person. You will get the truth and you’ll be left in no doubt. However, you also have to realize that being blunt means they’re not going to save your feelings in what they say. A person who is a little more sensitive may try and go around the houses a little before they speak. They may say something like “I think you’re doing really well, but if you just tried it this way it could be even better”. A blunt person will just say “it’s not working, it’s terrible, do this instead”.

Why a blunt person is often misunderstood

Being friends with a blunt person can be so beneficial to your life. But we will get further into that later. For now, let’s talk about why blunt people are so misunderstood.

They’re often called cold, heartless, rude, and plenty of other less than nice terms for their bluntness. We get it. From the perspective of someone who may be sensitive or not used to people telling them they are wrong or putting them in their place, a blunt person can come across as harsh. For the most part, blunt people don’t want to hurt anyone, they just don’t realize that their bluntness sometimes wounds those who are a little more sensitive.

Being a blunt person is a risk. By saying exactly what you think without worrying about people’s initial reactions or feelings can push some people away or rub them the wrong way. But does that mean a blunt person is actually rude or harsh? [Read: How to be a good person and transform your world]

What is a blunt person’s intention?

Yes, some people are just plain rude. But many blunt people truly want to help and have the best intentions at heart. A blunt person tells you the truth because it often helps later. They just don’t go about it in the best way sometimes.

A blunt person might tell you that you are making the wrong choices when it comes to dating. And that can come across as rude, but they just want you to be happy. Blunt people also tend to be lacking a bit of patience, so rather than letting you learn from your own mistakes or come to terms in your own time, a blunt person will spill the tea ASAP.

A blunt person’s true intentions are not to upset you or make you feel bad. They want you to face the truth now so you can be stronger later. They want you to hear what you need to hear rather than what you may want to hear. [Read: The qualities only a good friend possesses]

We all love the friend that tells us we look great in every outfit, and that we are definitely making the right career move by opening an Etsy shop to sell homemade jewelry. Boosting our confidence and nodding along with whatever we say is what a good friend does. But, are they just being passive or do they actually want the best for you? That’s what you need to think about.

You see, what a great friend also does is make you face your problems head-on. They make you question things and challenge yourself. A good friend inspires and supports you, but also makes you deal with the facts. And that is what a blunt person does. They care less if you are mad at them and care more about your happiness. But isn’t bluntness just rudeness dressed up as something else?

No. If you have a true blunt person in your life, it doesn’t mean they’re rude. You need to see the differences in their actions to know this. For instance, someone who isn’t blunt and is just rude won’t care about you at all. They won’t tell you things to make you do better. Also, they won’t give you advice so you can achieve something greater. They don’t actually care whether you’re their friend or not. That’s just rude, nothing to do with bluntness.

For sure, some people may take bluntness to be rude, but they just don’t understand that beneath it all, there are good intentions. Everyone is different – judge every person on their own merits but know that if you have a blunt person in your life, perhaps they’re just trying to help you do better.
