Would You Write a Love Contract? 30 Things We’d Put in Ours

Would you write a love contract between you and your lover? If we were going to have a love contract, here are the thing we would make sure go in it!

love contract

Perhaps, the idea of having a love contract sounds silly to you, or maybe it sounds like a great idea. Either way there is no denying it is an interesting concept.

Of course, when we usually think of contracts we think of contracts for our jobs and houses. They are formal, restrictive things, dare we say, that seem a little boring.

The idea of having a love contract means different things to different people. For some it might be a way to express to their partner how much they mean to them, what their idea of love is, and what they want to do to make the relationship as good as it possibly can be.

For others, the idea of a love contract may be more formal. A set of promises or rules to follow in the relationship, that, if broken, means it comes to an immediate end.

If you like the idea of signing a love contract with your partner, together decide what means the most to you both to include.

Why sign a love contract?

If you are looking for some ideas and inspiration for things you might like to consider including in your love contract. Things that strengthen and improve your relationship, take a look at what we think would be good to put in ours.

#1 I will hold your hand. Being affectionate with one another throughout your relationship is so important. We don’t mean you have to be all over one another or displaying furious and embarrassing PDA all the time. We simply mean to remember to always hold hands. A simple, but affectionate gesture that shows you care. [Read: How to make a relationship last: 19 love commandments]

#2 I will listen to you. It can be very difficult to remember to listen to your partner, particularly when you are busy, fighting, or upset. However, if you make a promise to try your best to listen, hear, and understand what they are trying to say—your relationship will be all the better for it.

#3 I will be gentle with you. Remember that despite everything, your partner is just as fragile as you. Be gentle with them.

#4 I will be caring. Be it when they have a horrible cold and need you to look after them, or when they are feeling hurt, lost or scared. Make sure you are there to care for them always.

#5 I will be open with you. Communication is the key to successful relationships. Make sure you remain open with your partner, don’t bury feelings away.

#6 I will let you in. It is important you share things with your partner. They should be your confidant and best friend. Don’t shut them out, let them share your life. Let them in. [Read: 10 ways to be a better listener in your relationship]

#7 I will tell the truth (even when it hurts). Being honest is so important. Even if you need to say something they don’t want to hear, keeping secrets destroys relationships. Don’t do it.

#8 I will support you. When times are tough we turn to those we love most for support. Make sure you are there for your partner when they need you the most.

#9 I will be your biggest fan. Everyone needs their own personal cheerleader in life. Be your partner’s and ask them to be yours. They should be the person that believes in you, no matter what.

# 10 I will be the best I can be. This is all about continuing to try and work at your relationship. Promise your partner you will always strive to be the best version of yourself you can be.

#11 I will try to make you happy. While you can’t always promise to make your partner happy, you can certainly try! [Read: The 25 sweetest romantic gestures for everyday life]

#12 I will remember the small things. This is all about not taking your partner for granted. Remembering the small things they do that make you smile means you always appreciate them and remember why you love them.

#13 I will learn from my mistakes. No one wants to be in a relationship where the same mistakes are repeated over and over again. Promise your partner that you will try to learn from yours.

#14 I will be patient. We can all be frustrating at times, and it is easy to get frustrated with your partner’s behavior too. Promise you will be patient with them, try to see where they are coming from, and to help them overcome any obstacles they have.

#15 I won’t sweat the little stuff. When you have been in a relationship for a while it is easy to get bogged down in little things that don’t matter. You can find yourself having big arguments about things so minor, to an outsider, they would be laughable!

#16 I will try not to place blame. Of course, we all have times when we are in the wrong. However, arguments rarely get resolved if all one party wants to do is blame the other. Try to talk through your differences, and always try to see the other person’s point of view. [Read: 20 things happy couples don’t do in a perfect relationship]

#17 I will accept all of you, just as you are. We are all flawed. If you want to truly love someone, you’ve got to accept them for who they are. If you are always trying to change your partner, they are probably not really the one for you.

#18 I will always go on dates with you. You must be willing you work at your relationship, and this means keeping the romance alive. Promise to keep going on dates with your partner, right up into old age!

#19 I will be your best friend. Your partner should be your best friend. Promise them they always will be.

#20 I will always be physical with you. Sex is important in a relationship. Make time for it. [Read: How important is sex in a relationship? The truth revealed]

#21 I will not let myself go. Sometimes when we have been with someone for a while we forget to make an effort with them. But your partner deserves more than this. Promise to always make that effort!

#22 I will be faithful. This might be a no brainer, but promising your partner you will remain true to them is always important!

#23 I will laugh with you. A relationship without laughter is hardly a relationship at all.

#24 I will travel with you. Go on far-flung adventures and explore the world together, making amazing memories as you do. [Read: 8 tips to have a great time when you travel as a couple]

#25 I will take an interest in your hobbies. So your partner may be obsessed with motor cars while you couldn’t care less about them. However, it is always important to take an interest in the things that they love. You don’t have to become an expert, but promise your partner you’ll make that effort—it means a lot.

#26 I will grow old with you. Promising you are in it for the long run is one of the best promises you can make.

#27 I will talk about sex with you. Communication transfers to bedroom talk too. If you talk openly about your sex life together, you are bound to have a better one.

#28 I will cherish our relationship. Let your partner know how much you value your relationship together and include this in your love contract too! [Read: Couples bucket list: 20 things every couple needs to do]

#29 I will treat you as an equal. Relationships are partnerships and each partner has an equal say, so promise to always remember this.

#30 I will be forgiving. We can’t always be perfect. We are going to make a mess of things from time to time. Being forgiving keeps your relationship strong.
